That is Not Who I Am
"So whoever is in Christ is a new creation: the old things have passed away; behold, new things have come." 2 Corinthians 5:17
We all have that one sin we can’t shake. Whether it is lying, stealing, judgment, criticism, sexual sin or something else. It is different for each of us, but makes us feel equally defeated and weak, and often causes us shame and humiliation. The lie of the enemy whispers, "That's just who I am." It is a clever deception that causes us to identify with the sin we are helpless to overcome. That sin we commit over & over, even though we hate what we do and we vow never to do it again. We know our lives would be so much better without it, but in defeat, we repeatedly succumb to the temptation because we feel hopeless in the face of it. All of our efforts to fight its irresistible magnetism are ineffective, and the enemy continues to whisper...it's just who you are, accept it and move on.
We are not alone in this struggle. Paul even wrote about it when he said, "I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do, I do not do, but what I hate, I do." (Romans 7:15) We feel disgusted with our weakness and inability to resist that humiliating, awful thing that seems to contradict every good thing about us. But God is never disgusted when He looks at us! In the middle of our sin, He sees us through the heart of Jesus and feels nothing but love, compassion and forgiveness. Through the lens of Christ's salvation, to Him we appear pure, spotless, holy and perfect, exactly as He created us.
What the enemy of your soul does not want you to know is that all you have to do is turn your eyes toward your loving heavenly Father and say, "Father, help me! I do not want to be that person anymore. Forgive me and change my heart! Transform my mind and help me become the person you created me to be. Set me free from this sin."
With that simple prayer, God will set you free! When we decide to turn away from that sin, He won't stop at just helping us avoid the temptation to do it again. He will literally take away every desire we ever had for it. Although we have to do our part by making the decision to stop, and we must run from the temptation when it threatens to overtake us. You say, “If I could do that, I would have already done it!” When you ask, He will make it easier for you to walk away. Even though you may occasionally fall back into that sin, you will have more power to resist it. And every time you choose to walk away from it, your strength to overcome it will increase. Every time you fall, just tell Him, "Lord, help me! I cannot do this in my own strength!"
The enemy wants to shame you into turning away from God. But God will never condemn you! When you ask, He will take away the strength of that temptation until it soon becomes a passing thought that you easily overcome. Eventually, you will have no more desire for it. It will have completely lost its power over you! Then you will feel disgust for the sin and not for yourself. THAT is what "freedom through Christ" means!
The amazing part is, He will give you the victory over it, and then He will give you the credit for overcoming it! How do I know? I have lived it...many times! If you doubt it, email me and I will pray with you...you don't have to tell me your sin, just that you need help. God knows exactly what you need and it delights His heart when you trust Him enough to talk with Him about it. He loves you so much! Let Him set you free so you can truly love yourself and become the person He intended you to be…fully authentic, no shame, no guilt…only contentment and joy in who you are becoming through His love.
Prayer: Father, thank You for this beautiful TRUTH of the all-cleansing, transforming power of Your salvation. Set us free from the sins that the enemy would use to defeat us. “Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And we all…are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.”
