Water Walking Faith
“Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.” Jeremiah 33:3
How cool would it be to walk on water? If you found out you could do it…you would probably plan a day at the lake to wow your friends with your new skills.
In a moment of great faith, Peter stepped out of the boat and walked on the water; but when he took his eyes off Jesus, fear overwhelmed him and he began to sink. I can relate to Peter because he failed Jesus so many times. He is the only one who got out of the boat, but he also denied even knowing Jesus when his friend was in trouble. That failure haunted Peter and broke his heart. In spite of that, Jesus called him the Rock upon which He would build His church. That is a beautiful picture of grace!
This year, God has tested my faith in several ways. Two of the more challenging tests are a one-year Daniel fast, and a prayer walk around Loop 610 in Houston. He has called me to pray that He will reclaim this city for the Kingdom of Christ and re-establish His dominion here in preparation for the soon-to-come great revival He will bring here. Then, instead of Houston being known as a haven for human trafficking and gang violence, it will become a beacon of God's light for our nation.
The Daniel Fast has challenged my fleshly appetite, but the faith walk has challenged my courage and tested my faith. Through these challenges, He is revealing the depth of my commitment to fully submit my life to Him...100%, all-in. This year has been difficult, at times, and I have to admit I have thrown a couple of short-lived but pretty spectacular pity-parties for myself…until I remembered that I voluntarily signed-up for this when I asked Him to give me “water walking, mountain moving faith.” As they say, be careful what you ask for.
What I have learned, so far, is that God is always good and His grace will literally encompass you in your darkest hour if you will just call out to Him. When we ask for strength or encouragement, He is always faithful to answer, and sometimes He gives answers when we are too self-focused to even think about asking for His help. He has given me strength for the journey, courage and encouragement in the face of fear and doubt, and rest when I did not realize how tired I truly was. I have discovered that there are places of intimacy with God that can only be accessed through total submission, brokenness, testing and pain. There are levels of faith that can’t be achieved sitting at your kitchen table, or even down on your knees in prayer. Those deeper levels require facing your fears, stepping out of the boat, and saying, “God, I trust You to see me through this thing You have called me to do. Forgive my fearful lack of faith. Thank You for the privilege of loving and knowing You so intimately.” The most amazing thing of all is that He enables us to do whatever He calls us to do. He gives us the strength, wisdom and ability to accomplish it, then He gives us the credit for achieving something we could never do on our own. How great and awesome is our God?
If you want to experience the deeper mysteries of God’s presence; if you want to “walk” on the proverbial water with Him, ask Him to show you how to do that. He’ll take you on a journey that will surely try and test your faith, and you will never be the same again; but it will take you beyond the bounds of any faith you can attain just sitting on your couch. You can experience Heaven on earth by going deeper in Him, but you will have to climb a proverbial mountain or two in the process. One thing I will promise you, you will be SO GLAD you did, because He will bless you beyond belief! This world’s best treasures pale in comparison to His Glory! Hey...if I can do this, anyone can!
Prayer: Our most High and Holy God…Abba Father, thank You for Your goodness, kindness and tender mercy in giving us the credit for doing the things we can only do in Your strength and through the power of Your Holy Spirit. I am in awe of Your grace and mercy. You are the personification of love. The glory of Your Presence fills me with wonder, and in You I am made whole, pure and complete. The more of You I have, the more of You I want. Take me deeper, Lord, into the realms of Your faith, anointing and glory. I want to swim in the River of Life with You. I want to bring a smile to Your face and delight Your heart. I want to accomplish everything You call me to do because my heart’s greatest desire is to see You face-to-face, to crawl up into Your lap and hear You say, “Well done, my good and faithful child.” I am Your child and You are my good, good Father. Overwhelm me in the beauty of Your divine presence and make me one with You. Open my ears to hear You answer when I ask what You would have me do this day. And when I reply with immediate obedience, let it be for Your glory, because You alone are worthy. I love You, praise You, worship and adore You, and give my life to You again today in the priceless, majestic Name of Jesus Christ, my Lord and Savior, amen.
