Campfires

“The heavens proclaim the glory of God. The skies display his craftsmanship. Day after day they continue to speak; night after night they make him known.” Psalm 19:1-2

The night is permeated with the scent of wood smoke, and the Milky Way paints a ghostly swath across a sky so clear the stars are startling in their brilliance. We huddle close around the campfire’s blaze, hands and faces burning as our backsides freeze in the cold, crisp air. My grandson softly plays his guitar as conversations center around hunting, sports, family and plans for the upcoming holidays. Laughter comes easy, thoughts seem clearer and hearts are full. There is something almost magical about sitting around a campfire that helps us get away from it all, even if only for a short time. It brings us back to the elements…the hot fire, cold air, and clear, starry skies…no technology, no hustle and bustle. Things slow down and we connect on a level that is more organic than seems possible in the bright glare of artificial lights and manmade surroundings. The hour grows late, but still we are reluctant to leave the warmth of that comforting circle of light, love and life.

What is it about a campfire that is so appealing? The frosty air and blazing fire are enticing; a study in contrasts. Maybe it is the contrast, itself, that makes us feel more connected…to the elements, the earth, and each other. Our senses seem to come to life with our bodies exposed simultaneously to the frigid air and the fire’s heat; our feet planted firmly on the solid earth while overhead a limitless sky rises to infinity and beyond. Around the campfire we encounter the simplicity of life and it appeals to the deepest part of our souls, even as the firmament above whispers of the infinite nature of the universe and how very small we are. Limitless space entices us to ponder what else might be out there beyond the atmosphere of this tiny blue marble.

I am reminded that the God who created us - and all that exists - tells us that not a hair falls from our head without His notice. He is infinite and we are so small, yet He is inextricably involved in the most minute details of our lives. This earth is His creation, and He is intimately aware and concerned about our every thought and every heartache. Our devotion fills Him with inexpressible joy because He loves us with an all-consuming love that we cannot approach comprehending.

So the next time you are sitting beneath a night sky full of stars, look up and give Him a smile…let Him know you are grateful, and ask Him to show you how to love Him better.

Prayer: Father God, thank You so much for creating us in such amazing detail that nothing escapes Your awareness. Thank You for always being there for us, and for being here within us as we strive to live this life in a way that will please and honor You. Help us remember to stop each day and focus our hearts and minds on You, our very personal Lord and Savior, for it is in those moments we believe You draw our spirits briefly home and touch us with Your amazing love. We love You. Teach us to love You the way You love us, and teach us to love each other, second only to You. We praise You, worship and adore You in the matchless name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, amen.
