An Imperfect Life

"For when I am weak, then I am strong." 2 Corinthians 12:10

Have you ever noticed that the most spectacular sunrises and sunsets occur as the sunlight plays off of the clouds? A clear sky is pretty, but not nearly so beautiful or interesting as when punctuated and enhanced by clouds. It is the clouds where you see the greatest colors ranging from darkest purple to brightest orange, and it is often at the edges of the clouds where the sunlight appears to be brightest, gilding them with highlights of gold and silver. And who hasn’t marveled at the phenomenon that photographers call “God light” where streams of sunlight shine through breaks in the clouds to produce glorious rays of light arrayed against a cloud-darkened sky? The most turbulent clouds often produce the most spectacular displays of light and color.

What a great metaphor for life! The most gracious souls and the most beautiful characters are often products of the deepest hurt and the greatest turmoil. While the trials and suffering of life would certainly be our clouds, God is our light, and together they produce patterns in our lives, without which our hearts might remain coldly brittle and our minds might become prideful. It is the humility of hurt that humbles a heart and gives God the opportunity to produce true beauty within a soul. How else could He ever get our stubborn, prideful natures to be soft enough to be moldable and teachable so He can use us to help others who are suffering something similar to what we have been through?

God can take an imperfect life characterized by pain, suffering, grief and sin, and turn it into a masterpiece for His glory. So, if you are going through a season of pain – even if it is a result of your own mistakes – ask Him to pour His hope, mercy, peace, grace and forgiveness into your heart so His love will become the beauty that characterizes your life rather than the pain you have endured. When that happens, you will become a beacon of hope to someone else who is hurting, or perhaps someone who thinks they have messed up so badly their life is beyond redemption. God can use anything – anything – for His good purpose. Wouldn’t you love to have the light of His love shining through the storms in your life like God-light through the clouds?

Prayer: Father God, thank You for the promise that You can transform every problem, mistake and pain in my life into a beautiful masterpiece for Your glory. As I focus my heart and mind on You today, flood me with the awareness of Your presence and let the light of Your love purify every imperfection, strengthen every weakness, heal every hurt, and fill up every empty and broken place until I become a perfect reflection of Your love shining like a beacon of hope into the world around me. Oh, how I love You, Lord! You are my person, my healer, my provider, my greatest strength and my highest hope. You are my dearest, kindest, sweetest and most beloved best friend. I lift up every eye that reads this and every heart that receives it and ask that You would touch and transform their lives with Your Truth, in Jesus’ name, amen.

Additional Scriptures:

“But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”

2 Corinthians 12:9-10

“Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.” Matthew 5:5
