A World Without Hope
“But hope that is seen is no hope at all.
Who hopes for what they already have?” Romans 8:24
Can you imagine what it would be like to live in a world without hope? No anticipation, no expectation, no faith. You might think a world like that would be a life of despair, grief, and miserable dejection, but what if I told you just the opposite would be true? You see, Heaven will be a place where every hope you have ever imagined will be fulfilled. There will be no need for anticipation because you will have everything you ever wanted. Patience will be obsolete because there will be no waiting, no delayed gratification, only joy, fulfillment and abundance. There will be no temptations and no need for self-control. Every potential will be achieved and every dream realized. It will be a world full of love, joy, peace, kindness, goodness, gentleness and abundance in all things because those are the fruit of the Holy Spirit that will endure throughout eternity.
If you are like me, working to overcome your trials in this world has led you to almost become friends with the struggle. After all, as you work through problems, you grow, you learn, and you enjoy the fruit of victory when you succeed. Even though you may get a few scrapes and bruises along the way, there is something deeply satisfying about overcoming a challenge, right?
Does that mean Heaven is going to be boring? With the resolution of all earthly challenges, will we have nothing to look forward to? Will we just sit around on clouds, strumming harps all day? Thankfully, that would be a resounding, NO! Heaven is a place of endless delights, pleasures beyond measure, and pursuits that are beyond the realm of human understanding. And with the realization of all our hopes and dreams, we will live in a completely wholesome environment of total peace, harmony, tender acceptance and complete authenticity, and our bodies will be perfect in every way. No imitations or impurities will exist there…everything that glitters will be gilded with pure gold, glistening diamonds and precious stones. The atmosphere will be custom-designed to suit our bodies, and heavenly music will be heard everywhere - including fantastic concerts by all of the great performing artists who have gone on before us.
The light of God’s love will permeate everything, and He will call us to come to Him in front of the throngs in Heaven, where He will recognize each of us, one-by-one, as His beloved child. When we stand before Him, looking into the adoring face of our Heavenly Father, we will be saturated and satiated in love like never before as He gathers us into His welcoming arms. The most wonderful things our earthly minds can conceive will, in that moment, seem dull, empty and meaningless in comparison to the rapture of His presence and the endless, sparkling possibilities of that reality. We will have important, valuable work to do in Heaven that will be deeply satisfying and perfectly suited to our individual characters and strengths. We will be able to eat for the sheer pleasure of it, and the wine will surpass anything earth has to offer. It will be a world of completion, perfection and beauty, the likes of which we can never know in this earthly reality. When we step through the veil that separates this world from that one, we will immediately know, with exceedingly great joy and the deepest possible gratitude, that we are finally home.
Prayer: Father God, thank You for the reassurance we have of eternity with You through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, our precious Lord and Savior. Help us to be mindful of Your presence and let our lives be a continuous prayer of love, praise and thanksgiving for all You have done, all You are doing, and all You will do, in us, through us and for us. We love You and long for the day when we can rejoice in seeing You face-to-face, as we join all of our loved ones who have gone on before us in worshiping and glorifying You as our God and King. Flow through us, Holy Spirit, and let our lives be like rivers of Your love, flowing through us into the hearts, minds and lives of every person we touch today, in Jesus’ name we pray, amen.
“Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.”
“Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life.” Proverbs 13:12
“Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” Revelation 21:3-4
“Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. No longer will there be any curse. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and his servants will serve him. They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign for ever and ever.”
