“Isn’t this the carpenter?” – Mark 6:3
Can you imagine owning – or even touching – a piece of furniture that was hand-crafted by Jesus Christ? Just picture Him – the Creator and Savior of the world – carving the wood, eliminating every flaw, fitting the pieces perfectly together, lovingly running his hands over it searching for any imperfections, sanding and smoothing its surface, staining and rubbing it with oil until it glistened…until He could see His reflection in it. What was once just a piece of wood, was transformed under the Carpenter’s hands into a thing of beauty with purpose and value. It is hard to believe He would have made anything that was not absolutely perfect.
The Bible doesn’t tell us what kind of carpenter Jesus was before He started His ministry. In fact, the people of His hometown rejected Him as their Messiah because He was just a common carpenter to them…nothing special. However, at age thirty, He left carpentry behind to become a Master Craftsman of people’s character. Just look at the job He did on Peter, alone. What a testimony to His patience and unconditional love.
If we will let Him, He will lovingly cut away the flaws and sins from our lives, too; and then painstakingly fill us with new desires and abilities. He will bring “sandpaper people” into our lives to knock off the rough edges, and He will allow trials to refine and strengthen us. His blood will cleanse and purify us so that His light will shine through us into the lives of the people around us. In His hands, we go from being common, ordinary people to something special: a new creation with a divine purpose that reflects the beauty and love of Jesus Christ, Himself.
Prayer: Father God, thank you for taking our deeply flawed souls and re-making us into beautiful new creations. Thank you for never giving up on me when I stubbornly refused to listen and insistently went my own way until my life was so torn and bruised that it seemed irredeemable. My God and King, I praise You because You, alone, are able to make me whole again, and You, alone, are worthy of praise, honor and glory. Help us to reflect your love into the lives of those You give us, and reveal Yourself through us so that they will come to know you better and love you more, in Jesus’ name, amen.
