It's Why He Created Us
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30
You know that moment when you cannot possibly pick up or carry one more item because there is a bag hooked on every available appendage, more things are clasped under both arms, and your only available fingers are precariously grasping your keys? The only place you could possibly carry one more thing would be balanced on top of your head! Anything to avoid making one more trip from the car into the house, right? I’m never sure if my need to carry everything at once is laziness because I don’t want to make another trip, or if I am just trying to save time. There is a reason to this madness, I’m just not sure what it is.
We laugh about it, but I tend to carry too many worries the same way. It isn’t like my cares and concerns are meaningless, they include things that legitimately need prayer: friends and loved ones with serious illnesses, other concerns like financial and relationship problems, not to mention the state of our nation and the world. But we are told to bring those things to the foot of God’s throne and leave them there for Him to handle…and He will handle them, whether or not we worry about them. When my day is filled with worry about all the things I believe God needs to take care of – things He already knows about anyway – instead of giving them to Him and moving on, I am focusing on the problem, not the solution.
When I am finally worn down by the enormity of the needs around me, I picture myself crawling up into God’s big lap and laying my head on His chest while He cuddles me like a little child. As I imagine resting in His arms and just being held there for a while, He quietly ministers peace, strength, encouragement and healing love into my heart, mind and spirit. Basking in the joy of His presence is more important than anything else we can do. We were created to have a love relationship with Him. When my mind is filled with the awareness of Him, my heart is set free because He takes all of my burdens away. Only then can His light finally shine through me into the lives of those around me; only then can I truly reflect His glory.
Prayer: Father, thank you for loving me so perfectly that nothing more is needed than time spent in your presence. Take the burdens of my heart and the distractions of my mind and make them yours so that my heart, mind and hands will be open to receive you, and I will be able to worship you without distraction. I love you, worship you and honor you in Jesus’ name, amen.
“Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” Psalm 139:23-24
“Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you… And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.” 1 Peter 5:6-7, 10
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.” Galatians 5:22
