Just Show Up
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted
and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
I felt so helpless. My friend had come to me, her soul and spirit in agony. She needed prayer and consolation, but words failed me. Although I wanted to pray, at that moment I had nothing but gut-wrenching grief for my friend’s pain, and all I could do was hug her, sit with her, and cry. My mind just seemed to go numb. I felt like such a failure, both as a Christian and as a friend. She stayed for a while but seemed to be in no better shape when she left than when she had arrived. I feared my sorrow for her pain had only made things worse.
Sometime later, we were together in a group discussing prayer and to my amazement, she revealed to our group that the best prayer she had ever received was a silent prayer of shared tears. She explained how she had been in a time of deep grief and the person she had sought out for prayer just sat silently and cried with her. For her, sharing her tears and the burden of that grief was a lifeline to Jesus, and was exactly what she had needed! It seems God had been sufficient for us both that day.
The truth is nothing could have fixed it for her in that moment. No words could have healed her wounded soul; nothing could have eased her hurt, but having someone to share her grief made it somehow easier to bear. There are some things in this life we just have to walk through and survive for a season. At times like that, no shortcuts are available because the process is where we gain our strength. Like a butterfly has to endure the exertion to emerge from its cocoon so its wings will have the strength to fly, we must undergo struggles in this life in order to be useful in God’s service. Sometimes we struggle alone with God; other times, when the burden is too overwhelming to bear on our own, God will send us exactly what we need at precisely the right moment…and sometimes, we can be that person for someone else. Even if we feel inadequate at the time, we just need to show up and God will do the rest.
Prayer: Father God, thank you so much for always being there exactly when we need you, and for giving us precisely what we need at any given moment. Help us to trust you more and fill us with your peace in knowing that you will always be there with us through every trial, every painful circumstance, and every test we must face. You are Jehovah Rapha, our Healer, and only you can lighten our burdens and heal our pain. When we must walk through times of difficulty, come alongside us and bring us the help we need so that we can grow through our time of trial and go on to thrive through your tender, watchful care. We love you and praise you for your mercy, grace, peace and the abundant love you pour into our lives every day, in Jesus’ name, amen.
