Can We Talk?

“…the prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.” James 5:16

Why pray? God knows it all anyway. I’ve heard that more than once, and can only say it is really more about building a relationship with God than asking for the things he already knows we need. He hears the desires of our hearts, even when we don’t talk out loud, and he answers every prayer: sometimes yes, sometimes no, and sometimes he says wait. There is really so much more to it than that, but it is also just that simple. Prayer focuses our minds on God, draws us to him as nothing else does other than worship music, and when his answers come, it reaffirms our faith that he really does hear us.

I love to hear people pray. It blesses me in a way I can’t explain. From child-like prayers to those of the most powerful prayer warriors, God hears them all. Maybe that is why I love to listen? One of my all-time favorite pray-ers is my friend, Lisa. She always starts out with, “Hi God, it’s me, Lisa…” That simple, straightforward approach delights me in a way I cannot explain, but I think it is because, in that moment, my spirit bears witness to how much it delights God, too.

While he knows you and everything that concerns you, his agenda is to spend time with you. He wants you to know him as intimately as he knows you, because it is only then that you can sincerely love him. When you truly know Jesus, personally - not just about him - and you encounter the overwhelming rapture of His presence, you will be forever ruined for anything less than a close, personal relationship with Him. You will be irrevocably changed, and you will want to live there, in his presence; compelled to seek Him because he has become your best friend. More than anything, you will want to be with him forever.

When was the last time you prayed with no other reason than just a fervent desire to spend some time alone with God? I urge you to spend some time in prayer with an open heart asking him to reveal himself to you. Nothing will delight him more, and when it happens, you’ll be so glad you did.

Prayer: Hi, Jesus, it’s me, Vicki. Please reveal yourself to the person who is reading this right now. Overwhelm them with the joy and love of your glorious presence so they can come to know you as intimately as you know them. I love you with all of my heart, mind, soul and strength, and I want everyone to know the amazing gift of your love. I will forever praise you, my Savior and my Lord. What a blessing it is to walk with you, talk with you, and know you as my dearest and best friend. I pour out my love to you from the depths of my heart in your precious and holy name, amen.

Additional Scriptures:

“Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” ~ Mark 11:24

“In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.” ~ Romans 8:26-27

“‘Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.’ An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him. And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.” ~ Luke 22:42-44
