Are We There Yet?
“I know where I came from and where I am going. But you have no idea where I come from or where I am going.” ~ John 8:14
Do you remember riding in the car as a kid, sitting in the backseat, bored and just wanting to be there? I remember asking over and over, “Are we there yet? How much longer?” until a rebuke from my mom would stop me mid-whine. I don’t know whether my distaste for riding in the car had more to do with my propensity toward car-sickness, or my irritation at being bored and completely unable to do anything about it. Patience has never been my strong suit.
A lack of patience has continued to characterize much of my life. I was always into shortcuts, ready to get the party started! I am not sure, now, whether I was rushing toward something, or away from myself, but one truth remains: I was certainly not lingering to smell any roses. It always seemed like life was a struggle, and I was more focused on making my way through each day, trying to make ends meet, without much consideration for the journey. Then God changed things up a bit…
Suffice it to say, he got my attention. I had no choice but to seek him, trust him, and rely on his provision; and in his mercy and grace, he started teaching me how to walk with him step-by-step. He didn’t fix it so I could say a quick (and insincere), “Thanks!” and hurry away with my own agenda. Instead, he drew me to my knees and forced me to depend on him. He helped me truly see him in the little things so I would believe, trust and depend on him in the big things. He brought me into a deep and personal relationship with him so I would look to him in every circumstance. What a gift!
I’d like to say I no longer get impatient, but unfortunately, that’s not true. However, these days my impatience to complete this journey and be in Paradise with my best friend is tempered with knowing he has important work for me to do here. He has also shown me that the treasures that are being stored up for me in Heaven are the people whose lives I touch with his message of love.
So I say it again and again…He loves you so much, and wants you to know him personally. Won’t you please invite him to visit with you today and spend a little time getting better acquainted with him? If you do, he’ll take you on the journey of your life. I promise, it is the best thing you will ever do.
Prayer: Father, let the light of your love shine through this message to touch the hearts of those who read it. Bless and anoint each of us with an outpouring of your love and wrap us in your peace that surpasses all understanding as we rest and bask in your presence. Reveal yourself more fully to those who ask to know you better, and draw them into a closer walk with you. Help us take delight in your love, your presence, and in walking with you step-by-step for the rest of our earthly journey, in Jesus’ name, amen.
