All That Glitters
"…Of all the people on earth, the Lord your God has chosen you to be his own special treasure.” Deuteronomy 7:6
Let this truth soak down deep into your soul:
You are a Child of the King,
A daughter (or son) of the Most High God,
Cherished, treasured, and dearly loved,
Not because of anything you have done,
But because you are His precious child
Exactly as you are, and you belong to Him.
You are a priceless treasure of exceptional worth;
Rare, highly valued, and adored by your Father in Heaven.
You are uniquely designed for a distinct purpose
That only you can fulfill.
You have been specifically created
To accomplish great and glorious things in His name.
This earth is not your home, not your final destination,
It is just a starting point, a learning experience
On the road to the greatness He has in store for you.
Your incredible journey is to be experienced and savored
Walking hand-in-hand with the One who loves you
And wants greater things for you than you could ever imagine.
I’ve never known a little girl who didn’t want to be a princess, and every little boy dreams of being a superhero at some point in their lives. Have you ever wondered why? I believe it is because those “fairy tale dreams” are mere shadows of the glorious reality we will someday experience in Heaven. That is where our true identity lies. It is a memory we can’t quite access, the reason we have that vague longing for something…indistinct…an innate lust for an undefiled greatness that can only seem like fiction within the parameters of this reality. You don’t dare share it with anyone else, or even admit it to yourself, because if voiced out loud it would be laughable.
One of my favorite stories is of a little girl who loved her daddy above everyone else in the world. Her most treasured possession was a plastic pearl necklace that she never took off. Every day when her daddy would come home from work she would run into his arms proclaiming her love for him, and every day he would respond, “Do you love me enough to give me your necklace?” To which she would cry, “Oh Daddy, you know I love you but this is my most precious gift ever! Please don’t ask me to give it to you!” And he would hug her tightly and tell her not to worry, it was OK. After some time, one day her daddy came home and when she proclaimed her love for him, he asked her, “Do you love me more than your necklace?” With tears in her eyes she reached up, unclasped the necklace, and gave it to him saying, “Daddy, I love my necklace more than all of my treasures, but I love you more than anything.” When she said that, he reached into his pocket and drew out a priceless necklace of real pearls with a golden clasp and put it around her neck as evidence of his great love for her.
This is what God has for us…if we will only trust Him. He gave us our lives and everything in them, but He also gave us freedom of choice because that is what true love does. If He forced us to love Him, that would be subjugation, not love. You have a God-shaped hole in your soul that only He can fill, and He is the only One who can truly complete you.
Prayer: Father, thank You for loving me so much that You want grand and glorious things for my life – this life You have given me. Help me to let go of whatever I am holding onto that is preventing me from opening my hands and arms in surrender to You. I love You and want more of You in my life. I want Your light to shine so brightly through me that others are drawn to You when their lives touch mine. I praise You because You are my good, good Father, my God and my King, my Lord and my Savior. I give myself to You now, fully and unreservedly, in Jesus’ name, amen.
