A Morning Visit at the Lake
“Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.” Psalm 27:14
The surface of the lake is placid and silver in the morning's light. A thin mist hovers just above the face of the water, a testimony to the stillness of the early spring air. As the sky turns from mauve to pink, the trunks and branches of pines across the way slowly emerge from the shadows lying along the shore. A distant songbird breaks the silence, herald of the new day. The world seems reluctant to wake and quiet reigns once more.
I sit cross-legged at the end of the pier, its long, narrow beams are cool at first touch, the wood’s grain raised and roughened by the seasons, but sturdy and solid. Water grasses enrich the air, layered with traces of clover and the earthy fragrance of the boggy shore. A soft splash whispers of life below the surface, and a tiny frog climbs up to perch atop a nearby cattail reed, hoping some unlucky bug will meander within its reach, a picture of patience. Maybe I can learn something from this tiny creature. It seems I have been waiting half of my life for the fulfillment of God’s promises, and my patience is wearing pretty thin at the moment. Loneliness seeps in and self-pity threatens to overwhelm me. In spite of my feelings, I re-affirm my faith in Him, knowing His timing is always perfect.
A cold, wet nudge lifts my hand and a silky bundle sneaks into my lap to beg for a scratch behind the ear, a hug and a few strokes on her head. My sweet dog is the personification of God’s love for me…patient, kind, forgiving, protective, and always there, waiting for my attention. Gratitude fills my heart and I say a prayer to the One whose abundance I enjoy and whose presence I came here to seek. Who knew He would choose to reveal Himself today through a snuggly little fur-ball of love?
Prayer: Father, forgive my impatience. I know your timing is always perfect and I trust your plan for my life. Help me, Lord, to focus on your many blessings and to remember that you love me more than I can possibly know. I believe in You, love You and trust You with all of my heart, in Jesus’ name, amen.
“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.” – 1 Corinthians 13:4-8
“For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what they already have? But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently. In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God. And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who[i] have been called according to his purpose.” -- Romans 8:24-28
